Been anticipating this collab HIGHLY since he hit us with that snippet on ustream. Ladies & gents, Jordan Rakei & Gwen Bunn.

It’s a great day to catch up on Huh What & Where’s discography as they’ve set everything on their bandcamp to “name your price” for today only. Get on it!

Jackie Ross “Summertime” (From the LP Full Bloom, 1964)

In actuality, Billy Stewart wasn’t the first artist at Chess Records to tackle the folk opera standard “Summertime.” Although she might have not been the first, Jackie Ross’s sublime version predates Billy’s smashing hit version by nearly 2 years.

Taken at a breezy, jazzy slushy pace with rich strings more befitting a standards LP, here’s again where I point to Jackie Ross being the more accurate successor to the Mary Wells throne than most any of women on the Motown roster. The arrangement of this cover would have not been out of place on the 2nd side of the My Guy LP.

It also proved that at 18, Jackie Ross was a vocalist far beyond compare. It’s a shame that Chess Records squandered her talents, and that efforts later down the road for her didn’t recapture her initial success with “Selfish One”

happy summer!
